Cables obtained by WikiLeaks shine light into secret diplomatic channels

WE DO DESERVE TO KNOW WHAT OUR GOVERNMENT IS DOING. It's our government not the elected officials government.
Most of what was released wasn't really dangerous things that needed to be keep top secret because it would be destructive to people, give an opponent some advanced technology, or allow an enemy nation to out maneuver our soldiers in the field as much as it was classified because it was either embarrassing if it ever came out or because it involve nefarious things our government might have been up to. Those aren’t legitimate reasons to keep what a government does from the people it governs or others that it effects.

We elect individuals to represent us and run things for us. These individuals are given special access that ordinary American's don't get.
We have no business releasing information that pertains to national security.

They aren't "worried". They are concerned that information about past or ongoing dealings, negotiations or tactics will be released to the general public. All are things that could damage talks with other nations or even military operations.
But you clearly don't get it. So I guess you would prefer total transparency? Good. Let's post all our top secret operations, tactics and research online. Also all of our defense plans. Next time we go to arrest or **** a terrorist lets post it online first. Lets inform the public exactly where and when we will be arresting said terrorist.
There needs to be transparency as I simply don't trust modern western governments. There are too many corrupt politicians who simply enter politics to further their own careers and line their own pockets rather than to humbly serve the people. The recent expenses scandal (also a leak) in the UK has shown just how many politicians were ripping off money from the taxpaying public and many have now lost their jobs and had to pay the money back :thefinger You only need to listen to what most politicians say, they either avoid directly answering a question, bitch about their opponents or massively contradict themselves on what they may have previously said. I simply don't trust them to be moral or ethical anymore so a certain amount of transparency is a necessity, unfortunate but that's the corrupt world we live in. :2 cents:
If you actually believed that all the people in positions of authority were acting for the greater good of your country I might agree that the release of this information is potentially damaging.
If you think this wikileaks stuff is even an iota as damaging or dangerous as what those actually in power are doing you're crazy.

My concern is that most of the people being "outed", or whatever you want to call it, aren't politicians as it were, but government employees, diplomats, military personnel, federal agents, etc. If we were talking about elected members of congress that would be one thing, but professional bureaucrats that are doing their jobs should be able to expect that their work isn't going to be undermined by this type of exposure. I see it more along the lines of what the Bush White House did to Valerie Plame. That was criminal and so are these leaks.
Your talking about money and financial stuff. The wikileaks documents focus on things like national security. Big difference.

many, many of them are diplomatic and intelligence assessments, opinions, analyses, feedback etc and, as such, are merely the perspectives of the respective authors and not necessarily facts.
(Theoretical example - a US diplomat might cable the State department about the 911 hijackers describing them as disillusioned, easily manipulated converts under the control of fanatical jihadi imams. A Saudi diplomat cabling Riyadh might describe them as devout Muslims who studied at respected madrahsas and answered the call of Jihad. Neither assessment is false or even inaccurate, but which version is 'true'?)

Seems to me that by definition a secret must be founded in truth, otherwise it's just an unknown myth...
