Future Predictions

I saw a programme yesterday in which some scientist guy made some predictions. First, he said DVDs would be obsolete by 2018. Fair enough, probably quite close. Then he claimed ties would no longer be produced by 2041. Can't see it myself, fashion goes in circles, but you never know. But then, he reckoned that car engines as we know them today would be out of use by 2034. 2034!

Come on, there is no way that internal combustion engines are going to be stopped in at least the next fifty years, and many new "green" fuels rely on that very system, so will they ever be out of production? :eek: :wave2:

Why change DVDs and CDs? They work great, if you keep them clean and don't scratch them.

Eight-tracks, records, cassette tapes, CDs, VHS, DVDs, Beta,
Laserdisc, and MP3's how many times are people expected to re-purchase the same music and movies?

The new fuel cell cars are not achieving the mileage we were promised they would.
Also, they are slower and they are made with too much plastic.

I like my big American vehicle.

By the year 3,000 they might be able to make a different type of vehicle.
I doubt by the year 2034.

Come on, there is no way that internal combustion engines are going to be stopped in at least the next fifty years, and many new "green" fuels rely on that very system, so will they ever be out of production?

The only long term option is hydrogen via nuclear, insofar as I have read. Those in the know, as in the scientific community at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, repeatedly maintain that nuclear energy is safe, so long as the proper modern safeguards are in place. Guess What ? They're In Place !

Well, if you believe in the Mayans' end of the world theory, DVDs, CDs, ties, and engines will all have disappeared then because we'll all be gone by then.

I concur with the DVD prediction.
I reckon that in future, movies will be stored/distributed on something like SD micro cards (current limit 2TB)
DVDs are a great medium, but as someone mentioned, they are prone to scratches and marks.

I also think that PCs will go the same way..
Smaller (perhaps small-laptop size), with no hard drives, just massive on-board memory holding all the data, with no DVD drives, just sd-card slots.

Also, computing power will go through the roof - processors will be up around the 10/20 ghz mark, in 20 years time.

BTW: I don't wear ties.. but as long as my novelty spinning dickie-bow stays around, I'll be happy.

Well DVD's have been obsolete since about 2005/6. It's just market dynamics. You can't go shove something, like was tried with BluRay, onto the market and expect it to sell. Especially now. So the future will be films in your flash. I guess you could still download your own pics and file 'em. That way you have the images with no actual box. The tangible becoming intangible.
I never really got the whole watch my movie on my laptop thing. Give me the big screen.

As for cars. If something doesn't happen with fuel real soon, we are fucked. Plastic is made from oil. No oil, no plastic. then we are really fucked. Anyone know it different please do tell.

The "spooky connection" quantum thingy, used for security codes for Swiss banking. maybe someone INCREDIBLY smart will figure in time travel into that equation, thereby helping mankind move across the stars.

The "beam me up Scotty." Still working on moving that molecule from one spot to another.

I can't answer the 'oil' question, but plastic can be recycled.
I work in the recycling industry and despite the our best efforts, there is still an awful lot of plastic that ends up in landfill sites.

There's plenty of oil about but it's going to cost a little more.

As for time travel , it's one thing to have a theoretical model where it's possible.But a human being is a carefully assembled collection of trillions of atoms and the chance of surviving time travel is just about zero.

Hybrid cars won't need the piston engines we have today, so the internal combustion engine in that sense will go, but biofueled cars, electric, hydrogen cells and biocell cars will keep going and developing. Hydrogen is a little of a white ***** in terms of logistics.

Plastics will be bioplastics which isn't a major problem. The problem is where the carbon source comes from. One alternative is to use atmospheric carbon rather than organic carbon, which is something I am more excited about.

Surely biofuel such as ethanol and RME still requires internal combustion, unless we go to jet engines. Everyone in the real-life transport industry seems to think hydrogen has no chance, at least in the forseeable future, due to producton and distribution costs, and of course all the safety problems.

Don't worry, modern "plastics" are made from potatoes and cannabis, so there shouldn't be a problem with that. :thumbsup: :wave2:

honestly i believe the car engines thing purely on the fact that we use so much gas and oil to make the vehicles run every day that by then we very well might have used it all up and it will simply be unavailable to anyone whatsoever.

I believe the DVD thing because digital Distribution will become dominant someday, since memory is getting cheaper and cheaper.

I find it very hard to believe that internal combustion engines will be phased out that quickly, but there is a good chance that we will see some forms of alternatives becoming somewhat popular by then. It all depends on what the world chooses to accept when the time comes.
